It might seem strange, but seeing ice on your air conditioner’s outdoor unit during the middle of summer isn’t as unusual as you might think. While your A/C is designed to keep your home cool, certain issues can cause the system to freeze up instead. The good news? Here are some of the most common reasons your outdoor A/C unit may be icing over and what you can do about it.
1. Restricted Airflow
One of the most common reasons an air conditioner freezes is poor airflow. When air can’t move freely through your system, the evaporator coil becomes too cold, allowing ice to form.
Restricted airflow is often caused by:
- A dirty or clogged air filter
- Closed or blocked supply vents
- Furniture or other objects obstructing airflow
If you notice ice on your system, turn the air conditioner off to prevent further freezing. Leave the fan running, however, as this will help circulate air and speed up the melting process. Once the ice has melted, replace your air filter and make sure all vents are open and unobstructed before restarting the system.
2. Cool Overnight Temperatures
Even during the summer, outdoor temperatures can drop enough at night to affect your air conditioner. Running your A/C when the temperature falls below about 60 degrees can sometimes cause the system to freeze.
If cooler weather is in the forecast, consider turning your air conditioner off overnight or adjusting your thermostat to reduce unnecessary runtime.
3. Refrigerant or Mechanical Problems
If airflow isn’t the issue, the problem may be something more serious. Low refrigerant levels, refrigerant leaks, or mechanical failures can all cause your air conditioner to ice over.

4. Your Thermostat Is Set Too Low

As a general rule, avoid setting your thermostat below 67 degrees. Keeping it at a reasonable temperature helps your air conditioner operate more efficiently while reducing the risk of freezing.
