How To Clean Your Shower Head & Faucet

Mineral buildup, hard-water stains, and soap residue can leave your shower head and faucets looking dull, and even restrict water flow. Our team at JSP is here to walk you through a simple, effective way to clean your fixtures using items you already have at home. With just a little soaking and scrubbing, you can restore shine and better performance in under an hour.

Step 1: Mix white vinegar and water in a bowl or sealed bag

We recommend creating a simple cleaning solution using equal parts white vinegar and water.

  • Use distilled white vinegar — it cuts through mineral deposits safely.
  • Mix in a bowl if the fixture can be removed.
  • Use a sealed plastic bag (like a zipper bag) if the fixture is still attached to the wall.
  • Aim for a 50/50 mix for the best balance of strength and safety.

Step 2: Secure the bag over the fixture or submerge it

Depending on the type of fixture, you’ll either cover it with the mixture or place it into the bowl.

  • For fixed shower heads or faucets, fill a bag with the vinegar solution and slip it over the fixture.
  • Make sure the nozzles or spout are fully submerged in the liquid.
  • Secure the bag using a rubber band, zip tie, or twist tie so it stays in place.
  • For removable shower heads, simply detach and place them directly into the bowl.

Step 3: Let it soak for 30 minutes to an hour

This is when the vinegar works its magic.

  • Give the fixture at least 30 minutes to break down mineral buildup.
  • For heavier scale, let it soak for up to an hour.
  • You’ll start to see residue loosening or floating in the solution — that’s normal!
  • Avoid soaking too long on delicate finishes.

Step 4: Scrub gently

Once soaking is done, JSP shows how a quick, gentle scrub finishes the job.

  • Use a soft brush or old toothbrush.
  • Focus on nozzle holes, edges, and areas where buildup is most visible.
  • Gently scrub — no need for heavy pressure.

  • Rinse the brush as you go to remove loosened debris.

Step 5: Run the water to flush any residue

After cleaning, you’ll want to flush everything out.

  • Turn on the fixture and run hot water for 30–60 seconds.
  • This helps remove any leftover vinegar and debris.
  • Check water flow — it should be noticeably stronger and more consistent.
  • Wipe the exterior with a soft cloth to give it a final shine.
